Mod OrNot

How to Detect Breakout Mods Early

How 7d/30d velocity, acceleration and the ModOrNot Score surface breakout mods before they top the charts.

Breakouts are visible before they top a chart. The moment a mod starts gaining subscribers faster than the week before, the change shows up in two numbers long before the total count looks impressive. Catching that moment is what separates "discovering" a mod from "hearing about" it after the fact.

The two numbers that lead

7-day velocity

Subscriber gain per day over the last week. It is the fastest honest read on current momentum. A mod whose 7-day velocity is climbing is being chosen more each day.

Acceleration

7-day velocity minus 30-day velocity. Positive acceleration is the breakout signature: the recent week is out-performing the longer trend. A mod that is merely popular has flat acceleration; a mod breaking out has a rising one.

Why total subscribers mislead you

Total subscribers reflect everything that ever happened to a mod, accumulated over years. They move slowly and lag reality. By the time a mod looks impressive by total size, its breakout already happened. If you want to find the next big thing rather than describe the current one, you have to watch deltas and their direction, not levels.

The confirmation triple

Before calling something a breakout, look for three signals together:

  1. Rising 7-day velocity — real current demand, not a memory.
  2. Positive acceleration — the trend is bending upward, not flattening.
  3. Recent update recency — the creator is active, so the growth has a reason to continue rather than fade.

All three together filter out the two most common false positives: the dead monument (big total, zero velocity) and the one-day spike (a brief velocity bump with no acceleration and no follow-through). The composite score built from these signals is what the ModOrNot Score measures.

Where to watch

The most productive place to look is a game you already follow, sorted by growth rather than size. On ModOrNot, the game hub's "Trending" and "Breakout" sections rank exactly this way, and the global trending leaderboard surfaces accelerating mods from every tracked game in one place.
